Currency and Banking in St Martin/ St Maarten

CURRENCY
Dutch
The local currency is the guilder, also known as the florin (abbreviated as
NAFl), which is broken down into cents. Guilder coins, among the only square
coins in the world, come in 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent, 1 guilder and 5 guilder
values. There are a few 5 guilder notes still being used, but the most common
paper denominations are 10, 25, 50, 100, and 250.
Prices are usually given in both NAf and U.S. dollars, and U.S. currency is
accepted virtually everywhere.
French
The local currency is the Euro (€), which is broken down into 100 cents. Coins
come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cent coins, 1 and 2 (€) coins, while notes are
issued in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 (€) denominations. U.S. currency is
accepted at many hotels. Many businesses accept U.S. currency.
TAX
Dutch hotels add 15% service charge and 5% government tax. French hotels add

TIPPING
10% and 15% is often added to hotel and restaurant bills. Taxi drivers have
come to expect 10%. Hotel staff like porters and bellmen generally recieve $1
per bag, 1$ to 5$ per day for maids. All-inclusive resorts don't expect to be
tipped.
TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES
Traveler's cheques are accepted throughout the country.
CREDIT CARDS
MasterCard, Visa, and American Express credit cards are accepted everywhere.
BANKING HOURS AND AUTOMATED TELLERS
Dutch
Banks hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 3:30pm and Friday 8:30am
to 4:40pm.
French
Banks hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 12:30pm and 2:30Pm to 4:00pm.
All banks have ATMs that accept international cards.
